Ranking tips for Squidoo lens

For me the most intriguing successful, fun as well, Web 2.0 Applications are Squidoo and Twitter. I want to share results coming out of my research on generating FREE traffic for Squidoo lenses.

It is easy to fall in love with Squidoo:

  • It is free, and very easy to create lenses
  • You get fast Google indexing, and improve your Google Ranking
  • Very little regulations, this is a debatable topic in politics those days, my position is on internet no-regulations is better, example: you can freely use affiliate links, this is huge benefit now when blogs, forums, ezine articles prohibit them
  • You have the maximum possible control over your lens: appearance, content, networking
  • It has also a larger community what translates in back links and traffic for you and the marketing potential is huge

I did some survey about Squidoo and I find out that there is a black spot in knowledge. The 5 advantages I just listed above almost everybody are agreed upon.

What is still foggy is how you manage to get traffic to your squidoo lenses to get in the top 100 lenses, because if you have a lens with the rank of 1,234,567 nobody will find you.

The result of my research teaches me that the main techniques are:
1. Wisely create tags (keywords).
1.1. You have to have a lot of tags, as many as you can (there is a limit of 40 per lens though), and use single words and phrases
1.2. Let’s say you have a tag of at home moms, you also add: at home mom, at-home-moms, at-home-mom, athomemomes, athomemom, profit for at home mom(s)
1.3. Add possible misspellings and typos: afiliate marketing
1.4. Can add question as well: Do you get profit from affiliate marketing? Do you earn income as at home mom,
1.5. reverse words of the same phrases: mom at home etc
You really do not know how the people create search request, but you can guide yourself with a powerful tolls: labs.google.com/suggest,
adwords.google.com/select/KeyWordToolExternal
1.6. You put important tags in the title, the first paragraph of the lens, and in the lens URL:
Squidoo.com/your-lens-name
The your-lens-name must include tag(s)

When I tested a lens that has just 3 tags vs. the same lens with 35 tags, I jumped from a #4000 lens rank to #45 lens rank. I consider this a significant jump.

2. After each update of my lens, I make the habit to
2.1. Ping my lens to: squidutils.com/ping-lens.php
2.2. Bookmark with: Twitter, Delicious, StumbleUpon, Digg, FaceBook, MySpace
(all are system created buttons ready to press in your lens)

Experiment with those 2 ideas and let me know if make a difference for you. It did for me!

Until next time, regards

Michaela
